Asthma is a chronic (long-term) lung disorder that causes inflammation of the airways, which lead to attacks of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and cough. During an attack, the muscles surrounding the airways tight and the lining of the air passages swell. This reduces the amount of air that can pass through them.
